Day and Night in Uptown

This past weekend was my favorite weekend activity in Uptown, in the winter. Events like these encourage us freezing Minnesotans to enjoy the winter just as we enjoy our summer. If only the lakes looked this beautiful all winter long...and REI had a constant flow of hot coco out there. The Loppet, a cross country skiing event, took over the uptown streets. A block of Hennepin and a few lanes of Lake St were covered in snow for this event. Ice sculptures illuminated with candles filled the lake at night. Last year, uptown didn't have enough snow for the event so it was moved off site. The year before I participated in the event, but found it more enjoyable to walk the course with so many participants. So, we put on our long johns and headed out to see what was going on.

Right outside of Calhoun Lake was an ice sculpture contest...Above is the one that St.Johns made...looks like they gave up right away, but left a sign saying "we tried" with the design on it-- typical Johnnie! ;)

There were heats of races throughout the day which they closed down Lake and Hennepin to host them on...sucky for drivers, awesome for walkers :)

I will never understand why cops insist on running their cars all day during events like these...

Once the sun set, we headed out to Lake of the Isles for the luminaries. The track around the lake is lit with small ice sculptures with candles in various shapes

Flame throwers drew quite the crowd

Our favorite Luminary

I hope you all had an enjoyable weekend and relished in the slight hope that Destiny's Child is getting back together! Oh yeah, and the Camel was totes right!
